A few weeks ago Brendan was diagnosed with stage 3 Coats’ Disease, a very rare condition that causes abnormal development of blood vessels in the eye as well as swelling and detachment of his retina. The condition does not have a cure and has almost entirely eliminated vision in his right eye. Fortunately, it is not life threatening and his left eye has compensated for it. Yesterday he successfully had the first of several laser eye surgeries and injections, which hopefully will stop the progression of the disease and save his eye. Based on the stage of development, it is unlikely that his vision will be restored.
Coincidentally, 8/17 is National Coats’ Disease Awareness Day. Treatment options are much more effective if identified early. This disease is often diagnosed in boys aged 8 to 12. It almost always only impacts one eye. A telltale early warning is to take a flash photo that would normally cause red eye. Instead of red, an eye with Coats’ disease will reflect white or yellow light. (Zoom in on first pic.)
