Lee Center played some pretty serious baseball .. 1910 my dad, Howard Wellman Sr and his brothers Don and Walt. played ball. .
The base ball field was located on the corner of Greenwing Rd and Old Chicago road in Lee Center and owned by Chris Ulrich’s father . It is now a pasture and the cottonwood trees my
grandfather planted in the 1800s are no longer standing , and grew along the road
The last photo shows the uniforms that my grandmother Maude made for the team. ( my two uncles Don and Walt ) ~ taken early 1910~14s?
Photos post cards were taken by local photographer , Lippincott
Helen writes” I don't know how she found the time; maybe Amanda, her mother in law, helped her out. I remember Aunt Grace saying Amanda lived with them, she had a Bible by her bedside that she read. Maude died in 1911; Grace thought she died of strep throat. No antibiotics those days. Bess had to come home from Northern Illinois college to help out at home. Grace said she had to pack her clothes in a peach box and went to live with her Aunt who lived down the road from them.”
